Meet District Governor 2016-17 (Rotary International District 3291, India)
An alumnus of Modern High School and Presidency College, Calcutta, Shyamashree Sen stood first securing a first class in both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Political Science. She began her career as a copywriter then became a stringer with Aajkal, a Bengali daily. She contributed regularly to The Telegraph, Sonar Bangla and Business Standard. She edited the youth magazine Just Now and was associated with Kolkata on Wheels magazine. She is a poet and has published a collection of poems, Stolen Moments. Shyamashree manages the NGO, Nimble Fingers, showcasing crafts of Bengal on a global platform. Together with her classmate, she runs a publishing house, Colour Me Green, publishing books for children. She is also partner in a reputed public relations company, Connections.
She is involved in a lot of social activities. She served as Honorary Secretary of Indian Federation of University Women’s Associations and serves as Association Representative of University Women’s Association of Calcutta. She was the first lady President of the Eastern Chamber of Commerce and is associated with many NGOs like Thalassaemia Society of India, NIAW, Saroj Nalini Dutta Memorial Association, Ananya Onnomon. She serves as a member of the executive committee of the Presidency College Alumni Association.
Shyamashree, an active Rotarian for 22 years,and her husband Rtn Sunanda are Major Donors and both their children are Paul Harris Fellows. She was a Group Study Exchange Team Leader to RI District 7410 (North Eastern Pennsylvania, USA) in 2008, District Secretary in 2001-02 and has served as Zonal Assistant Governor four times and District Editor, GML Chair for a few times as well as ICM Chair. She was the RI Task Force Zone Coordinator – Zone V (2001-2002) for New Generation Membership. She has received the Four Avenues of Service Citation from the RI President in 2008. She has attended three International Conventions of Rotary at Singapore, Los Angeles and Bangkok, where she was selected as a speaker in one of the breakaway sessions. She is a member of ROTI (Rotarians on the Internet) as well as RGHF (Rotary Global History Fellowship).
Shyamashree is a Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) graduate who has completed the Trainers’ Training at Bhubaneswar in 2010. She was the Assistant Governor responsible for setting up the RLI in the erstwhile District 3290 in 2002-03. She is a member of Rotary Club of Calcutta Metro City and is the Club Trainer of her home club.
Shyamashree has become the District Governor of Rotary International District 3291 which comprises of 11 revennue districts of West Bengal including Kolkata and also Andaman and Nicobar Islands. She has recently returned from San Diego, USA where she received a week-long training to serve as District Governor at an International Assembly with more than 350 others from all over the world.
Shyamashree is married to Capt Sunand Sen and they have a daughter, Sunrita who is studying for her Master’s in Law in USA and a son Sumit who graduated from Drake University in USA and is working at Wieden & Kennedy in Delhi.
